Minds Behind Maps

NOTE

The Evolution of OpenStreetMap: A Journey of Innovation and Simplicity

In 2004, there was a difficulty in accessing map data, even for academic institutions, because it was proprietary. The idea of creating an open source mapping project like Wikipedia or Linux seemed impossible to many. Other projects at the time focused on specific datasets in specific geographies, but OpenStreetMap took a customer-focused approach and allowed people to map anything anywhere. The project went from a complicated Java-based system to the simpler version we see today. The speaker played a key role in writing the server software and doing multiple talks to promote OpenStreetMap.
