The dea of the middle way is set up in this fashion, by going to one extreme in order to correct another. This is a very common asian technique, and it is found especially in zen. When they are asked about something sacred, teachers will always answer in terms of something secular. What is the buddha the tree in the garden? The question immediately turns into akind of a metaphysical thing. So when you ask about something secular, they answer in termsof something sacred.
