Mentoring the Machines: Setting the Course for the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Dr. John Vervaeke

NOTE

Embodiment and Consciousness in Machines

For a machine to have happy thoughts or experiences, it needs consciousness with embodiment, its own frame or oomveld. This implies being embedded, embodied, extended, and able to enact novel behavior. Machines should sense, feel, think, and act to develop cognition, intentionality, and the ability to create novelty. To reach this level, machines need a frame to solve the frame problem similar to Marvin Minsky's challenge in AI development. An essential aspect is having a body, according to Spinoza's philosophy, where mind and body are inseparable, with the body self-organizing to seek out conditions for its existence, differentiating machines from simple entities like fire.
