In sports writing, I was viewed as the specialist due to being a science writer in sports. I always strive to take something ordinary and make it rare. Developing breadth is important, even though being interested in many things can be a bad strategy. Nathan Mirvold, a former post doctoral fellow of Stephen Hawkings and Microsoft's first chief technology officer, believes specialization is rewarded more than generalization.
