The evolution of language representation has presented challenges due to its fundamental differences in symbolic thinking and its impact on the traditional graded sequence of biological processes. While there must have been an incremental process in human evolution to become better interpreters of language, there is also a need to consider the existence of simple languages in the past. This requires a shift in thinking about language, possibly resembling what is known today as a ritual, which involves iconic and indexical features.
