Challenging Propositional Knowing
Society is currently undergoing a shift towards valuing knowledge workers who engage in remote work using platforms like Zoom, focusing on cerebral and utilitarian values. This move has taken us away from embodied knowledge and towards a purely rationalist approach. The historical progression from the physical, heartfelt understanding of belief in Christianity to a more propositional way of knowing, influenced by the Protestant Reformation and the scientific revolution, has shaped our current perspective. The emphasis on written contracts and propositions as the basis of society has limited our ability to see beyond propositional knowing. To counter this trend, there is a call to incorporate more participatory and prospectival approaches, emphasizing conversation skills and broadening the range of skills needed in the modern medium. This shift aims to challenge the dominance of propositional knowing and offer an alternative to authoritarian thinking, transcending mere left and right-wing ideologies.
