Universal Basic Income and the Hypocrisy in Silicon Valley
Universal Basic Income (UBI) is proposed as a social safety net to address the disparities created by capitalism, particularly in abundance situations where people should not have to prove their worth for basic necessities. However, tech companies like Uber pose a contradiction regarding UBI. While employees may genuinely support UBI as a remedy for the negative impacts of their companies, the broader Silicon Valley narrative often reveals a hypocrisy where UBI is seen as a means for these companies to maintain their profit models. This reinforces an economic structure where wealth continues to be extracted from workers and consumers, similar to historical monopolistic practices seen, for instance, with the Dutch East India Company or Walmart. When tech firms advocate for UBI, it's perceived as a way to ensure a constant flow of money to sustain low-wage labor, rather than addressing the root issues of economic inequity. Ultimately, UBI, rather than alleviating wealth concentration, could enable the richest to remain even more entrenched in their positions, perpetuating a system that benefits the few at the expense of many.
