Refinement and Responsibility in Machine Learning Product Management
After creating a candidate model, the refinement process is crucial as the initial model is unlikely to be the one implemented. Machine learning adds complexity and can introduce unexpected outcomes, including biases. Product managers should anticipate and prevent poor outcomes by considering impacts on underrepresented groups and creating test cases. If problems arise, it is the product manager's responsibility to set standards and make necessary changes to the model, raters, or policies.
