NOTE

Subjective Experience of Sleep and Time Perception

Sleep science and medicine do not ignore the subjective metric of how individuals feel about their sleep. The restorative nature of sleep has been added to the diagnostic criteria for insomnia. Even if one doesn't struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, they can still be diagnosed with insomnia if they wake up feeling unrefreshed. In addition, people without insomnia can have a distorted perception of their sleep duration based on the stage of sleep they wake up from. When awakened from REM sleep, they underestimate their total sleep time by up to 50%, whereas when awakened from deep non-REM sleep, they overestimate it by about 10%. These findings spark intriguing theories about time perception during sleep.
