What Happens When the Sand Is Self Organized?
Sand grains self organize into a mound through bouncing, friction, and gravity. As the order increases, the system becomes critical and can collapse. However, it can also spread out and form a new mound with emergent capacity. This cycle continues with the possibility of collapse at any point. This concept of self-organizing criticality can be observed in the brain.
