Touch at a Distance

Radiolab

NOTE

Sound Is More Like Touch

Anne Fernold traveled the world recording parents talking to their babies and discovered that regardless of language, they all used the same melodies to communicate. These melodies included a rise and fall for praise, a sharp staccato for prohibition, a rising pitch for attention, and a comforting melody. These melodies are understood by infants and resemble touch rather than speech.
