#119 Todd Simkin: Making Better Decisions
The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish
Reflective listening can lead to profound understanding and empowerment in conversations
Reflective listening, despite initially seeming simplistic and unhelpful, can lead to deep understanding and empowerment in conversations by making the other person feel heard, seen, and capable of making better decisions. This method, derived from 'Teacher Effectiveness Training', involves repeating back what the person has said without offering solutions or interpretations, allowing them to explore their thoughts and feelings more deeply. The speaker's experience with using reflective listening with a friend showed that this approach can have significant positive impacts on relationships and decision-making. Although it may seem basic, the power of reflective listening lies in fostering meaningful connections and personal insights, making it a valuable communication tool in various contexts, even with children.
