NOTE

Reducing Conflict and Polarization by Understanding One's Own Understanding

In any context with potential for conflict, hubris can arise due to a lack of understanding. By gaining a more accurate understanding of intentions and causes of conflict, we can have more productive conversations. This applies to relationships, businesses, and meetings. People are hard to persuade because we hold strong positions, but lowering the temperature and taking a mechanistic approach can help. By focusing on understanding rather than personal values, we become less egocentric and have better conversations. Studies show that talking people through their understanding reduces polarization.
