The Role of Payment in Perceived Interest of a Task

Participants in an experiment were asked to lie about the boredom of a task. Surprisingly, those who were paid only one dollar for the lie ended up believing the task was more interesting than those who were paid 20 dollars. This contradicted the dominant behaviorist theory of reinforcement. According to cognitive dissonance theory, when paid less, people justify their actions to themselves and convince themselves that the task was more enjoyable than it actually was.
