Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud's nephew, played a significant role in shaping public opinion and inventing propaganda. He also influenced the cigarette industry by using a publicity stunt to encourage women to smoke, resulting in a booming market. Bernays then became friends with Eisenhower and helped him institute the military industrial complex. Bernays advocated for turning Americans into consumers to maintain a strong industrial capacity for potential future wars. The result was the worst of both worlds.
