Neural circuitry and goal setting

Goal setting and achievement relies on the ability to orient in space and time, continuously updating progress towards goals. Neural circuitry for goal setting involves four key structures - the amygdala, basal ganglia, go and no go circuitry, lateral prefrontal cortex, and orbital frontal cortex. The orbital frontal cortex evaluates emotional and arousal states in relation to goal pursuit, determining feelings of happiness, frustration, sadness, or anger based on progress or obstacles faced.
