User Centered Performance in Product Development

User centered performance refers to symbolic customer obsession or user centered practice that is more about signaling dedication to customers rather than focusing on actual learning and driving better outcomes. Examples of user centered performance include requesting quick user studies at the end of a product process just to validate assumptions, conducting executive listening sessions or focus groups with the intention of getting close to the customer but lacking a focus on actual learning. It also includes implicit engagement in cognitive biases, confirmation bias, and ego, where the mindset of wanting to be wrong and falsifying is replaced by the desire to validate. This type of behavior is common among PMs and designers and is symbolic of dedication to customers but does not drive better outcomes or impact.
