Maintaining Imperial Position in the Persian Gulf
The British maintained a core imperial position in the Persian Gulf until 1971, which was much later than commonly perceived. The American dominance in the Middle East was still quite young until 1979, and relied on a stable Iran with the Shah, who was a powerful and reliable leader for conducting business.
