The Rise and Fall of Mobile Homes in America
The mobile home industry was booming in the late 60s but collapsed in the 1970s due to a downturn in the housing market. Unlike normal builders who can weather the storm by cutting staff, mobile home manufacturers struggled to recover. They relied heavily on subcontracting and had less flexibility in scaling operations. As a result, mobile homes now only account for less than 6% of new housing units, down from 20% in their peak.
