#519: Eating Disorders: Inpatient Treatment & Challenges – Helen West, RD

Sigma Nutrition Radio

NOTE

Importance of Person-Centered Care in Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorder care is highlighted as being relational, emphasizing the importance of supportive relationships. Person-centered non-prostrative approaches like Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) focus on understanding a person's values, offering supportive psychotherapy, and collaborating with a dietitian to reverse starvation. Despite being a control group in trials, SSCM performed similarly to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Enhanced (CBTE). There is a recognition of the need for flexible services that adapt to individual needs in eating disorder treatment, rather than just adding components to existing approaches. The challenge lies in differentiating between person-centered care and centering the eating disorder in treatment, particularly for restrictive eating disorders like anorexia nervosa.
