NOTE

The Neo-Assyrian Empire: A Forgotten Pathfinder Empire

The Neo-Assyrian Empire, though often overlooked in the narratives of great ancient empires, played a fundamental role in shaping succeeding empires. It was the first to establish institutions, infrastructure, and ideas fundamental to empires, earning it the title of a Pathfinder Empire. Stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Nile, the empire's power was unquestioned from the mid-8th to the mid-7th century BC. Assyria's armies were unparalleled, engaging in territorial conquests, resettlements, and the veneration of their patron deity, Ashur. The empire boasted monumental cities, advanced roads, a sophisticated bureaucracy, and innovative military techniques including iron weaponry and horse-mounted cavalry. The meticulous record-keeping of the Assyrians covered tribute payments, deportations, and casualties in battle. Despite its impact on subsequent empires, the Neo-Assyrian Empire continues to be underrepresented in historical discourse.
