NOTE

Chronic Deficit and Weight Loss

Successful weight loss and maintenance often showcase exceptions, yet many individuals maintain sobriety, which helps improve behavioral regulation. A critical aspect of weight loss is the chronic deficit response, particularly in energy expenditure, which is easier to measure than food intake. Research indicates that for every kilogram lost, energy expenditure decreases by approximately 30 kilocalories daily. Over time, this amounts to significant calorie reduction; for instance, a 10-pound loss equates to a decrease of around 150 calories per day. A pivotal study noted that individuals who have lost a substantial amount of weight, like 100 pounds, experience about 25% lower energy expenditure compared to those who have never been obese but share similar physical characteristics. These individuals, termed 'reduced obese,' must consume 25% less than their counterparts to maintain their weight. The reasons behind this persistent deficit remain uncertain, possibly linked to a naturally slower metabolism.
