Don't expect too much from people whose jobs are on the line if they break the rules. Understand their motives and tailor your argument accordingly. Bureaucracies are run by humans with their own risks and incentives. Make it a win for them too, not just for those fighting against it. Treat it like a game, understanding each person's motivations and decision-making process. Give others a chance to weigh in early for a higher chance of success.
Bureaucracy exists to provide consistency and structure, but it often stifles creativity and productivity – and breeds misery. In this episode, Adam investigates why we wind up with stupid rules, how to cut red tape without creating chaos, and what it takes to hack bad policies for a greater good.
