NOTE

Understanding and Communicating with Teenagers

Teenagers often just want us to listen and be empathetic when they come to us with their distress. They do not want advice, but rather curiosity and empathy or just empathy. Teens sometimes wait until parents are in bed to talk because it allows them to control the meeting, including the content and timing. Some teens prefer texting or having conversations in the car, where they can tightly control the dialogue. Additionally, teens may avoid opening up because they anticipate a negative or unsupportive response from their parents, such as being given an 'I told you so' or having their information blabbed.
