International Law and Mass Violence: Colonial Roots and Practices

Speaking Out of Place

NOTE

International Law and Colonial Histories

International law, shaped by colonial histories, not only prohibits certain violence but also enables others in subtle ways. Israel is not only violating international law in its actions towards Palestinians but is also manipulating and exploiting its ambiguities and biases. The dichotomy of terrorism versus legitimate sovereign violence, used to justify actions like the war on terror and Israel's activities in Gaza, overlooks the colonial histories that inform it. The erasure of these histories enables the perception of terrorism as an exceptional threat, masking the deeper colonial and racial foundations.
