The Management of Nuclear Waste: Regulations, Storage, and Solutions

The nuclear industry is often criticized for managing toxic waste, but in reality, it handles it better than any other industry. Nuclear waste takes up very little space and is safely contained in concrete canisters at power plants. Plans to bury the waste deep underground, where uranium comes from, have been hindered by bureaucratic red tape. Finland has successfully created geologic deposits for waste disposal. While some worry about the long-term danger of radiation, alpha radiation is not harmful to humans and gamma radiation only lasts for a few hundred years. Overall, the nuclear industry is effectively managing waste with existing solutions.
