Machine Learning Street Talk (MLST)

NOTE

Capacity for planning and free selection in sentient beings

The distinction between sentience and self-organization is explored in the adversarial research collaboration funded by the Templeton Foundation called Intrepid. The debate revolves around the capacity to plan and make selections, contrasting integrated information theory with predictive processing. The question is at what point does one have qualitative experience and recognize oneself as the experiencer. Some argue that consciousness requires counterfactuals and agency, while others believe it can exist without them. The heart, for example, lacks agency and is considered not conscious, while the brain is seen as conscious.
