Ethical concerns of sourcing conflict minerals for electronic devices
The problem with electronic devices lies in the use of conflict minerals, such as cobalt, sourced from regions like the Congo where mining is associated with slave labor and extreme poverty. The current battery technology depends on these minerals sourced unethically, but there is potential for ethical sourcing. However, China and mine owners prioritize profits over ethical practices. If such practices were discovered in a developed country, there would be widespread outrage and political changes. The solution lies in good governance, long-term planning, and coordinated efforts to minimize damage and maximize benefit for all.
