Metabolic Adaptation: Individual Differences Matter
Metabolic adaptation is a complex phenomenon influenced by individual variability. Defining it strictly as a change in resting metabolic rate post-weight loss reveals significant differences among individuals, with changes ranging from a decrease of 337 calories to an increase of 352 calories per day. Approximately half of those who lose weight see a resting energy expenditure drop of more than 40 calories daily, while one-third may experience an increase. These adaptations typically manifest after about two weeks and are more pronounced during active weight loss phases, decreasing during maintenance. Importantly, no consistent link exists between the degree of metabolic adaptation and weight regain, a finding that applies even to extreme weight loss scenarios, such as with gastric bypass patients or participants from competitive weight loss shows.
