Episode 39: Byrne's Methodology for Discovering Animal Insight (part 3)
The Theory of Anything
Understanding the concept of deception in animal behavior
Deception in animal behavior may not necessarily involve a theory of mind, as it does in human deception. For example, a cat's behavior that appears deceptive, such as luring the owner to the door so it can take the chair, may not involve the cat being consciously deceptive. Instead, it may have learned this behavior through trial and error, without a true intention of being deceptive. The distinction lies in the absence of a theory of mind in animals when engaging in deceptive behavior.
