Omega 3 Fatty Acids in Fish Oil
The upshot of a 1971 research was that fish became the go-to source of omega-3 fatty acids. It was chosen because people in the Western world were more likely to eat fish than whales, seals, or seabirds. Fish oil supplements quickly became popular, but they didn't meet the expectations.
In this 194th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.
In this episode we discuss the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was awarded for nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. We discuss the innovation for which the prize was awarded, what some of the known effects are, and what has been claimed about the (lack of) effects. We review some Nature news articles, including the finding that mRNA vaccines are linked to unexpected menstrual events. And we compare the costs and benefits of eating fish, supplementing with fish oil, and pharmaceutical drugging with Vascepa, and discuss connections between the three.
