Deflecting Accountability with Woke Smoke

Wokeness in American society is often leveraged by bureaucracies as a façade of virtue to evade accountability for significant failures. This phenomenon manifests across various sectors, including the military and education. In the military context, instead of confronting the inadequacies related to the controversial decision to invade Iraq post-9/11, leaders divert attention toward discussions about systemic issues like racism. This redirection serves to mask the military's actual shortcomings and promote a narrative that sidesteps responsibility. Similarly, in education, the notion that mathematics can be deemed racist is employed to obscure the real failures in effectively educating students, particularly in inner-city schools. This strategy of attributing blame to broader social issues permits institutions to avoid addressing the systemic problems that contribute to poor educational outcomes for marginalized youth.
