Acetaminophen toxicity: what to do when you see a rise in ALT levels
Toxicologists prefer using AST as it rises first and falls faster than ALT, providing a better indication of patient recovery. Some acetaminophen tablets are slow release, with the second dose being released in the small bowel. This may lead to line-crossers and requires repeat testing in 8-12 hours for an accurate result.
