Social Deprivation and Drug-Related Deaths
Social deprivation is closely associated with drug problems and deaths, particularly in the UK. The use of heroin shifted from wealthy urban areas to deindustrialized regions where people turned to heroin as a coping mechanism. Individuals who started using heroin in the 80s and 90s are now aging and more vulnerable to drug-related deaths. The most deprived and deindustrialized areas in the UK, such as Glasgow, Dundee, North East England, and Blackpool, have the highest rates of drug-related deaths. This pattern of drug problems and deaths is linked to social deprivation. Similar to the US, racial disparities exist in the UK criminal justice system, with black individuals being disproportionately targeted for drug offences and facing higher rates of imprisonment compared to white individuals.
