The idea of 'be yourself' challenges the notion of authenticity and is seen as the worst advice for humanity. When we're unsure or uncomfortable, rather than just being ourselves, we should look to effective role models and step into their roles. Having a role model provides a template to work around and helps us find our own authentic self within. Finding our voice, whether in writing or in life, is not accomplished by shutting off influences but by imitating others and internalizing their sound until one day our voice becomes unique.
