In 2010, Mexico issued its first century bond, which was cleverly offered at a discounted price to attract investors. Despite being a small emerging debt manager, we became the largest holder of this bond. The low interest rates and politically popular notion of borrowing for a hundred years were the main factors behind Mexico's decision. It seemed like a free lunch for us, but our sovereign analyst had a theory explaining Mexico's motivations.
