Understanding Patient Mentalization in Psychotherapy
Difficulties in knowing what to say to a patient in psychotherapy may indicate a temporary lack of mentalizing on the part of the patient, leading to a breakdown in communication. Rather than self-criticism, it is important to recognize these moments as opportunities to rewind, reflect, and identify where the understanding was lost. By acknowledging the interruption in mentalizing between the therapist and the patient, it can lead to a valuable discovery and an effective way to reestablish communication and connection in therapy sessions.
