NOTE

Know Thy Heart: Measure Your Maximum Rate

While the common formula of 220 minus age provides a baseline estimate for maximum heart rate, it lacks precision due to significant individual variability. Research indicates that for a group of 1000 individuals of the same age, typical maximum heart rates will vary, and about two-thirds will fall within a range of 170 to 190 beats per minute. Relying solely on this formula may lead to inaccurate intensity estimations for individuals. A more effective approach is to measure maximum heart rate directly, using methods such as running a fast lap on a track or incrementally increasing resistance on a stationary bike until exhaustion. This personalized measurement yields a more precise understanding of one's maximum heart rate, making exercise intensity targets more accurate and effective.
