The Human Predicament: In Between Hobbes and Rousseau
The human condition, according to Freud, is a blend of the worst aspects of Hobbes and Rousseau. Initially, humans are portrayed as vicious beings who, upon socialization, find themselves in social orders resembling the viciousness of the Hobbesian state of nature, albeit in a modified form like capitalism. Consequently, individuals are haunted by Rousseauian fantasies of a lost paradise that never truly existed, leading to a constant yearning for an Edenic state that was never enjoyed.
