How to Breathe Better With Your Chest
When a child is stressed, their breathing becomes rapid and shallow. To regulate their breath and shift into a calmer state, a helpful tool is placing a hand on the chest and belly, closing the eyes, and taking slow, deep breaths through the nose. This activates the diaphragm, the main muscle responsible for breathing, and allows for a fuller, more relaxed breath. By practicing this technique, we can shift from using chest muscles for breathing to the diaphragm, reducing tension in the upper body and promoting a more balanced breath.
