Evolution of Barbarian Kingship within the Roman Empire

Barbarian kingship within the Roman Empire was a new development, with kings emerging as these tribes entered the Empire. The Vandals, Alans, and Suaves had kings from the beginning, and in the case of the Vandals, kingship remained within Godeguisal's family for the entirety of their existence. The Alans eventually became subordinate to the Vandal kings, adopting the title 'Rex Wanda-Lorum et Alenorum.' The Ostrogoths already had kings before settling in Pannonia, with Theodoric the Great coming from a line of prior kings, although the dynasty lacked deep roots.
