Exploring Responses to Chronic Anxiety and Stress
Chronic anxiety can lead individuals to take a step back or disengage as a way to cope, although they could actually stay in the situation and be fine. Some individuals, when stressed, seek control as a coping mechanism, engaging in tasks like mowing the lawn, organizing, to alleviate frustration and anger. This form of control can help improve sleep and reduce rumination. Commonly, strong leaders may exhibit anger or irritability as signs of strength, when in reality, it might be an anxious response. Anxiety responses can vary between self-pity and self-righteousness, with a tendency to seek control, perfection, knowing the answer, being there for others, and approval from people as false needs.
