History of Ideas 2: Hume

Past Present Future

NOTE

Hume Mansplaining Essays as a Bridge Between Learning and Gossip

Hume believed that the essay form bridged the gap between the world of learning and the world of conversation. He observed that the world of learning, where academic thought originates, often struggles to reach a wider audience due to communication barriers. On the other hand, the world of conversation, characterized by gossip and chat, tends to lack depth and philosophical reflection. Hume saw the essay as a means to communicate learning to the world of conversation, serving as a bridge between the two worlds. Despite initially describing this as the world of men (learning) and the world of women (conversation), he later reconsidered this characterization.
