Understanding a joke and finding it funny are distinct processes in the human brain, according to neuroscientists. Brain activity of 26 people was studied as they consumed humorous material. The study showed that understanding a joke involves activity in the dorsal striatum and ventral striatum, while actually enjoying the joke only involves the ventral striatum. Both areas are rich in dopamine, suggesting its importance in humor processing. Further investigation is needed. Read more in the Journal of Neuroscience.
