The Genoese and the Slave Trade in Portuguese Settlements
The Genoese were involved in slave trading in the Mediterranean and played a significant role in the slave trading network./nThe decline of trade in riches from the East led the Genoese to focus on trading slaves in the West where there were fewer natural resources./nAlthough Portugal and Spain had many slaves, they were mainly domestic slaves and not yet working on plantations./nSpanish individuals from different social classes, including merchants and clerks, likely owned one or two slaves, mostly Berbers from North Africa and some black slaves from the West Coast of Africa./nEastern Europeans made up the majority of slaves owned by Spanish individuals.
