People with lower self-esteem are more likely to engage in internet trolling and take pleasure from causing distress to others. This behavior is associated with traits of psychopathy and a deeper psychological issue. It is important not to let the opinions of such individuals affect one's self-esteem, as their issues are unrelated to the person being targeted. The concept of 'tall poppy syndrome' illustrates how successful and confident individuals are often targeted for takedowns, as they are seen as a threat by others. Recognizing this can provide a much-needed self-esteem boost and help in understanding that being targeted is a sign of doing something right.
