The Decline of Conservatories in Naples in the 18th Century

In the 1770s, Naples faced an economic crisis, causing the conservatois to lose their money and standards. By the end of the 18th century, the situation was quite bleak due to the disruptive Napoleonic regimes. The declining standards of teaching and counterpoint became evident. The conservatories lost their dominance in the music world, partly due to the changing industry and the declining demand for apprentices. The 19th century saw echoes of Italian solfegeau, but it was no longer economically viable.
