NOTE

The Role of Adenosine in Sleep and Energy Regulation

Throughout the day, as you metabolize energy, you accumulate adenosine which binds to receptors increasing sleep pressure. This leads to sleepiness and fatigue. When you sleep at night, adenosine is removed, recycled into ATP, and your energy is restored. The feeling of grogginess upon waking is known as sleep inertia, influenced by the clearance of adenosine during the night. Quality sleep ensures less grogginess and higher energy levels the next day. Feeling groggy all day or being able to sleep easily during the day are not normal and suggest inadequate adenosine clearance, impacting energy production. Poor adenosine clearance can result in low energy levels due to insufficient ATP production.
