NOTE

The Neuroscience of Dopamine and Addiction

Dopamine is a crucial neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting electrical signals between neurons, particularly involved in motivation and reward. Addictive substances trigger a much higher release of dopamine compared to non-addictive ones. Pleasurable activities such as eating chocolate or engaging in sex cause a modest increase in dopamine levels, while highly addictive substances like nicotine and methamphetamines lead to significant spikes. The brain seeks to maintain a balanced dopamine level, and thus, it regulates its own dopamine receptors and transmission in response to pleasurable stimuli to restore this balance.
