The three witnesses of the angel and the plates had a supernatural experience and were deeply involved in the translation of the book of Mormon. The eight witnesses had a very physical experience, seeing and handling the plates. The witnesses were designed to operate together, with the three having a supernatural experience and the eight having a natural one. This design makes it difficult for critics to dismiss their accounts and suggests a deliberate approach to providing evidence for the authenticity of the book of Mormon.
